This is an important part of fossil folklore, the story goes that ammonites are the snakes chased off the cliffs of Whitby by St Hilda and her magic whip. Her whip turned them to stone. By doing this the snakes of the moors were removed. When ammonites were found, snakes heads were carved onto them. This is a Liassic ammonite from Whitby
